Sandlin Lowe, MD is excited to add his experience, expertise, and creativity in general psychiatry and clinical neuroscience to the proven diagnostic and treatment successes for which Dr. Amen and the Amen Clinics are internationally known. Dr. Lowe’s innovative ideas and approaches have provided new insights into the core pathology for many neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism and brain injury. He now brings his energy, imagination, and reverence for research and translational clinical neuroscience to the Amen Clinics.
Dr. Lowe is an expert in Translational Clinical Neuroscience and Therapeutics and has created new paradigms for the conceptualization, evaluation and treatment of patients with neuropsychiatric conditions. The theoretical basis for this work is founded upon his work with Dr. Rodolfo Llinas and Dr. E. Roy John, two of the Fathers of modern day neuroscience.
In the past few years, for personal reasons, Dr. Lowe’s efforts have been directed towards autism spectrum disorders. He has special interests in abnormal neural dynamic states, particularly thalamocortical dysrhythmias, and how they manifest as major pathophysiological mechanisms in many neuropsychiatric conditions, including neurodevelopmental disorders. He now is specifically engaged in the search for the etiologies of these dysrhythmias and treatments for them.
Currently Dr. Lowe and his colleagues are at work combining small molecules, biologicals, and cellular and regenerative medicine therapeutics with transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and other applied field energy methods in the design of new treatment protocols for autism, acquired brain injuries, and conditions of cognitive impairment and dementia.
